Spoilt for choice? Here’s our pick of the must-dos on the route towards Agnes Water & 1770.
Noosa Heads
It’s worth noting that Noosa and Agnes Water were both winners of Queensland's 2021 Top Tourism Town Awards, and for good reason. Check out the coastal trail that runs north, past the beaches of Noosa National Park.
Further west on the shores of Lake Macdonald, you'll find Noosa Botanic Gardens. It stretches over 8 hectares with a vast array of native, exotic plant species, complete with Greek-style amphitheatre.
From Gympie to Great Sandy National Park
North of Noosa lies the historic town of Gympie. It’s famous for its goldfield and celebrated buildings found on the Queensland Heritage Register.
Head north and east into Cooloola, Great Sandy National Park. This is a top destination for hikers of all standards. Take in the majesty of the massive dunes, towering cliffs and wide ocean beaches. Enjoy a few nights’ glamping whilst you’re there.
Hervey Bay
A little further north and the coastal city of Hervey Bay boasts a range of exciting and spectacular golf courses.
Hervey Bay is also well-known as a place for observing humpback whales and acts as a hub for tours to nearby Fraser Island. Whale-watching boats operate during the July to November migration season.
Bundaberg Central
Getting thirsty? Well, one of the claims to fame of this coastal city south of Agnes Water is a delicious dark Bundaberg Rum, also known as Bundy.
It all began over a hundred years ago when the local sugar mills had a problem with what to do with the waste molasses after the extraction of sugar. The Bundaberg Distillery offers museum tours and tastings.
Bundaberg also acts as the setting-off point for diving and snorkelling trips to Lady Elliot Island and Lady Musgrave Island. There’s plenty of fishing going on too from the coastal national parks.
Mon Repos Regional Park
From Bundaberg, it’s a short drive to the home of the biggest concentration of nesting sea turtles on Australia’s eastern mainland. This is the southernmost gateway to the Great Barrier Reef and it’s full of environmental treasures and cultural pleasures.
