Living large in smaller spaces
Sooner or later, we reach a point when we look around and make decisions about the type of lifestyle we want to live. For some it is downsizing the family home to simplify their life. A new home may leave you pondering the best way to utilise your new space for both design and storage purposes, but some simple tips will help you create a space you’ll love!
Colour Stick with light colours to give a room a brighter, airier feel. Using colours from the same colour family and including an accent wall can also make the space pop and seem larger. White walls make a room seem big and open, and you can easily add in colour through accents such as furniture and accessories.
Open and airy Choose furniture that doesn’t have arms or doesn’t go straight to the floor as this can open space and provide a sense of lightness. Narrow shelving, slim lines for your table choices, and some well-placed mirrors or art pieces can also open your space.
Versatility Nowadays, there are lots of great furniture options that can serve a dual purpose in the home. Ottomans or coffee tables that double as storage compartments, or a day or sofa bed in the spare room can double as a guest bedroom or media space. Make your pieces work hard for you!
Outdoors Bring your outdoors in. Start with vertical planting to provide a lush backdrop and add hanging baskets or shelving for potted plants without using up a lot of space. An outdoor lounge or dining setting with a fantastic outdoor rug will feel like a whole extra room. You can even consider folding tables and chairs to have on hand to pull out when you have extra guests.
Downsizing doesn’t mean giving up on good design or space. Living your desired life does take a bit of effort but with planning and some smart tips, you can end up with a home that feels as every bit as spacious as the one you left.
